XSI and President, Barry Schaeffer will be presenting or moderating sessions at key industry events this year. If your plans permit, be sure to attend. Each of these events provides valuable perspective into the critical challenges and opportunities facing information managers, technologists and decision makers:

GEMt Native XML CMS and XSI Tools powers documentation system for Home Depot Supply Unit.
Home Depot Supply, formerly Hughes Supply, industry-leading building supply supplier, has selected XSI's GEMt XML content management system and other editorial tools for its management and publishing systems for internal software documentation. Working closely with the XSI staff, HDS has developed a highly efficient page and web delivery environment, based on the native XML capabilities of GEMt and its Tamino repository and using XQuery standards to post and service queries from intranet users.
U. S. Department of Energy selects GEMt for key documentation program.
DOE has selected XSI's GEMt to power its critical management and publishing operation for classification guides, a key part of the agency's security apparatus. The guides, published for all parts of the DOE infrastructure, define classification levels for topics and other key information elements in the DOE environment. Working with DOE staff and prime contractor, Project Performance Corporation, XSI will support the entire information life cycle from authoring tools in PTC's Arbortext editor to final dissemination acorss the DOE internal and contractor environment.
Congressional Research Service(CRS) turns to X.Systems for support in authoring system redesign.
CRS, the key research and analysis arm of the Congress, has begun a thorough analysis and redesign of its authoring environment to better participate in the growing movement toward e-government and structured informaiton. CRS, after a competitive procurement, selected XSI as its partner for this important project. CRS faces the significant and growing challenge of keeping Congress current with research and analysis on a wide variety of subjects, often facing tight and unyielding deadlines driven by legislative demands. With a staff of several hundred subject matter experts, CRS must bridge the difficult gap betwen subject matter expertise and editorial automation elegance. XSI, with over a decade of experience in the development of complex authoring and management systems, will assess current requirements and resources, then propose a new XML-based architecture that meets the needs of authors, managers and users within the overal CRS computing environment.
X.Systems Contributes to Key XML Security Article.
Barry Schaeffer, XSI President, shared the firm's experience with the growing need for XML security in an April 13th Federal Computer Week feature article by technology reporter, Rutrell Yasin. Drawing on X.Systems' more than 10 years experience with structured data, including XML, Schaeffer provided a description of the growth of interest in XML functionality, sometimes in advance of the corresponding focus on security. The article discusses various approaches to fill this gap, including gateway appliances like XSI partner, Sarvega's Guardian Gateway system.

XSI Named as Key Team Member for Redesign of Senate Information System System for Florida.
Using a concept over two years in formation by XSI and the State, X.Systems, along with team members Infinity Software Development of Tallahassee, Arbortext and Software AG, is developing a pioneering approach to the State's legislative information process. Working closely with the Florida Senate and State Office of Legislative IT Support, the team is modeling the entire legislative process from an XML content-based approach, to a degree unprecedented in the world of state legislatures. Slated for completion in August, this architectural effort will culminate in a design capable of phased implementation by the Senate. Pilot implementation of the first system segments is slated to begin prior to year-end. In addition, the concept will support significant improvement in the ability of the Senate and House of Florida to work together without imposing a single technology approach on either. Barry Schaeffer, President of XSI said, "State legislatures face unique challenges, and the content based approach to automation is the only way to effectively address them, while supporting the autonomy of each branch that is a part of our constitutionall system. Florida is taking a bold step, and we're proud to be part of the team making it a reality."

XSI Supports Federal
Budget Process.
 For the first
time in history, the U. S. Federal budget was generated, managed
and published using XML, and we were there. XSI was selected
by OMB to provide development and management support for transitioning
the budget to XML-based publication and interactive collaboration.
XSI integrated an initial XML environment based on Arbortext
Epic editorial and publishing software, providing the required
styles and editorial customizations to support the budget's
unique needs. For this first phase of OMB's long range plan,
the Citizens Guide and agency chapters, were imported into XML
from agency submissions and managed through their life cycle
using the Arbortext and XSI tools. During the middle of January,
as the budget input was being submitted by the executive agencies,
XSI provided non-stop on-site support to OMB staff in the production
process, ensuring that this first XML cycle didn't hit any unforeseen
snags.
 This project
is part of an active move toward enhanced e-government support
by the Executive Office of the President.
XSI installs
"MAPS" Register/Code Publishing System at Oklahoma.
 After more than a year
in development, XSI and State Office of Admininstrative Rules
in Oklahoma City, have installed the first site of MAPS, XSI's
Multimedia ACR (Admininstrative Code and Register) Publishing
System. MAPS provides automated support for all phases of the
Code and Register publishing life cycle, including agency import,
XML repository management, fully automated Register publication,
periodic supplement and full Code publication, interactive web
and CD-ROM publishing.
MAPS is built on high performance
components from Arbortext, IBM/Lotus and ISYS Systems, integrated
with content management, workflow and editorial tools developed
by XSI. The Oklahoma installation marks the state of the art
in this key portion of state government publishing automation
and the first fully XML-based publishing system in Register
and Code publishing. XSI designed the system over several years
starting with its work in Texas and culminating in the MAPS
project and its work with Oklahoma.
XSI, Software AG announce partnerhsip
for XML content management.
 Growing from an initial
contact in September, 2000, XSI has forged an active partnership
with Software AG to deliver native XML content management solutions
based on Tamino, SAG's pioneering XML repository. XSI is integrating
its GEM content management suite with Tamino to deliver both
the power and security of native XML management and the powerful
functional support of the GEM work management environment. GEM
was developed in the latter 90's to provide a flexible solution
to the management of structured content, SGML and XML.) Because
it grew from real challenges, GEM directly addresses the most
significant needs of high-performance publishing organizations,
particularly those that must support multiple media and audiences.
Also part of the GEM/Tamino solution are XSI's powerful Productivity+PLUS
editorial tools including link authoring and management, variant
management and revision management, creating a fully integrated
environment for the high-performance publisher. GEM and the
P+ tools are optimized for use with Arbortext's Epic tools,
the industry's premiere XML editorial resources.
 Tamino, the industry's
first truly native XML repository, provides a flexible and highly
scalable content environment. Tamino stores XML content in its
native structure, providing access via a number of mechanizms
including http:, DOM, XQL and relational queries. Barry Schaeffer,
XSI President, said "Tamino answers a host of structured
content management challenges the industry has grappled with
for years. It is the perfect foundation for what GEM brings
to the table and Software AG is the perfect partner for this
effort."
